Prelude No. 2
For this composition, I tried writing in the harmonic style of the common practice period, slightly outside my comfort zone but the results don't sound too bad to my ears.
Some self criticism:
- First 3 bars are fully parallel 3rds between melody and bass, this could be considered stale counterpoint, but perhaps the texture masks this.
- I think I'm overdoing the V/V tonicization, I've done it at m. 4, 15, 20. For such a short piece this could be too much.
- Ending feels quite abrupt, maybe it can benefit from an extra 2 or 4 bars with a little coda.
Some feedback from others:
- Dip into another key centre in the middle
- Ending is a bit sudden
- m.5 on beat 2 the G in the melody - the Eb below that seems to "steal" from it
- m. 20 might be another good place for the previous arpeggio to change direction and lead up to it
- The high G7 chord on beat 2 of 20 kind of "stalls it out" and "calls too much attention to itself" in that way - it too is kind of stealing the thunder of those higher notes on beat 1
